District-wise Rural and Urban Households and Population Distribution

The district-wise household and population data show clear differences in population size and rural–urban distribution across districts of Kerala. Malappuram records the highest population (4,112,920) and a large number of households, followed by Ernakulam (3,282,388), Thiruvananthapuram (3,301,427), and Thrissur (3,121,200). Urban population is particularly high in districts such as Ernakulam, Kozhikode, and Thrissur, indicating stronger urbanisation and economic activity. In contrast, districts like Idukki, Wayanad, and Pathanamthitta remain predominantly rural with relatively small urban populations. Overall, the data reflects Kerala’s mixed settlement pattern, where some districts are highly urbanised while others continue to have a strong rural demographic base. Additionally, in all districts the female population slightly exceeds the male population, reflecting the state’s favourable sex ratio.
