EARAS: Growth rate in area and production of all crops in 2022-23

The 2022–23 growth data show a mixed performance across crops, with notable variations between area and production. Strong positive growth in both area and production was recorded for crops like papaya (+13.51% area; +13.7% production) and cardamom (+3.07%; +4.21%), while paddy registered a decline in area (–2.05%) but a significant rise in production (+6.01%), indicating productivity gains. Tea and cocoa also showed higher production growth despite marginal or negative area change, suggesting improved yields. In contrast, crops such as betel leaves, ginger and pepper experienced declines in both area and production, reflecting contraction in cultivation and output. Some crops like banana, coconut and pineapple showed modest production increases despite reduced area, while rubber remained stagnant with zero growth. Overall, the data indicate crop-specific shifts, with productivity improvements offsetting area reductions in several cases, alongside clear downturns in a few traditional and spice crops.
